    914 347 805 11 Steering Wheel

I have one of these wheels in not too horrible condition. via the search I find it is from a 1972 914-4 (in the compilation wheel thread).

I am trying to figure out how hard it would be to use it on my 1973 911.

Secondarily, I'm curious if it is worth the effort. It has a big black shroud or something on the back of the hub, and I am not sure how to remove that. Also, the leather grip is cracked on the back with thousands of tiny cracks. The worst spot is a 3" long crack on the front of the grip near the top of the wheel. But the leather is tight and the stitching is all really good.

So what steps would i need to do to mount it on my car?

    Thx in advance!

    You need to:

    - remove the 914 turnsignal cancelling ring (3 screws)

    - remove the black plastic 'spacer' (for want of a better word) by undoing the 4 recessed retaining screws

    - use a 911 turnsignal cancelling ring placed on the back of the wheel to mark the location of the retaining screw holes

    - drill/tap/countersink the 2 holes for the cancelling ring

    - fit the cancelling ring to the steering wheel

    - fit the wheel to your car using the original spring & associated recessed 'collar' from your 400mm wheel

The 911 cancel ring will sit 'on top' of the back surface of your wheel rather than in a recess (present on the '69-'71 914/4 & 914/6 wheels) so isn't perfect, but many people run with this set-up.

Having said all this, if the leather on the wheel is in poor condition, I'd personally look for an earlier wheel that doesn't require any modification.

+ 1000 My thoughts exactly! Andy just put them to words better than I ever could.

Thanks, Andy - I may try to do that sanding operation on the leather from another thread.

Wish I still had access to a lathe - I could cut that recess in there.
