    Help diagnosing engine issue

Unfortunately my engine has developed a rattle so I would appreciate any thoughts.....tensioner, rocker arm? Oil pressure ok, temp ok, no leaks, no smoke etc. had to drive it 10 miles home. It's a 66 car with a 65 engine which has webers, s cams. Original tensioners not pressure fed. I have had the car a short time and it was rallied before that but laid up for some months.

    Thanks

Drain the oil, remove the sump plate and inspect for metal particles.

    Yes.

Drain the oil, remove the sump plate and inspect for metal particles.

The idea that someone can diagnose your engine noise by listening to a video is silly and unrealistic to say the least. The above advice is always the first step to determine whether it's terminal. If nothing is in the strainer and the leakdown is good then you know it's superficial and you can address it as such.

You're just pissin in the wind right now and want others to offer a urinalysis.

It was a request for help, some thoughts, not a full blown diagnosis - I wouldnt expect that. What I should have expected though was the tone of your reply.

Why are you so easily offended? Honest question, Jon from Herts.

Imagine if someone posted on a health forum a video of their "cough" and requested a partial diagnosis?

You were given great advice by one of the most knowledgeable people in this community and immediately asked for a second opinion.

Ok, without getting into a long exchange..... I am not very mechanically minded, understand some basics, can google with the best of em but was after a few thoughts on the kind of things it could possibly be...partly to educate myself but also to inform my own questions (and also understanding more as to what I am told) when it comes to taking the car to an expert. I completely take your point about difficulty of diagnosis by video but as I said, was really just after a few thoughts based on others experiences. I will drain the oil and hope for the best in the meantime. I wasn't seeking a second opinion and didn't intend it to come across like that.

The rattle mentioned isn't coming through well on the youtube. However, not a very smooth engine is what can be heard.

Check plugs for a nice color. Inspect wire ends as well.

    Jon from Herts,

You absolutely came across as looking for a second opinion.

As Ed and others in this community who eat, sleep, and crap Porsche can attest, what good does it do surveying a bunch of unprofessional opinions simply based on personal experience when you admit that you're not mechanically minded? There is no scientific process in that and all it does is make it more confusing to determine a path forward. The best that one can hope for is that a pro like Ed offers his advice for free. And if that happens one would be very wise to quickly follow it.

Glad to know that you understand that now.

Don't take things so personally; I piss in the wind on a regular basis and deserve a rebuke when I get bystanders wet.

BTW: Again as Ed will attest; our customers who come in with preconceived ideas as to what's wrong with their car because they got it from the web are usually the biggest PITA.

Either you trust your mechanic or you don't.

In any event, good luck and hope it's nothing serious.

Correction...fwiw at 7 sec - to 15 seconds, is a definitive audible rattle out of the motor there.

Let us know what you find.
