    Porsche 904 Carrera GTS engine

    Hello experts!

I'm thinking of bidding on a very good looking Porsche 904 engine type 587/3 - seen in an online catalogue of a german auction house. I've never bought on an auction but figured out that the price given under "Limit" must be the lowest price at which they will sell.
Can anyone judge by the pictures and information if their Limit-price is appropriate/ or how much higher would you go in a prebid? It's Automobilia Auktion Ladenburg (you can search their online catalogue by key words "porsche engine...").
They've got some other spare parts as well, appear quite trustworthy overall so I reckon the engine is genuine.

    Thanks for any (quick) help!!

I'm no expert by that is a lot of money works out at $280k then commission etc.!!!! I'm in Northern Ireland and know that a company Capricorn Engineering in Germany make quad cam Porsche engines for around 100k euro.

that kind of money would have me bring in my own expert and not rely on what the seller says. Not that I have that kind of money to even think about buying Porsche parts. Good luck and do your homework.

I am sure Heinz can help..

I would suggest you contact Ladenburg and ask them for the following:

    - Name of engine rebuilder and associated detailed invoice listing all the work and sub-contracted work
    - Rebuilders spec sheet from when he tore down the engine. All good rebuilders keep these and note all critical dimensions and components needing replacement
    - Overview of replaced components and source of the new components
    - Leak down numbers
    - Compression numbers
    - Dyno sheets if available

If any of the above can not be handed over consider the engine a core requiring at least a check up by a known expert. For the price listed (at the very high end of what I have seen engines sell for) it better be absolutely perfect.

Link to Capricorn page. Price is actually 120k€ + 20%VAT.

You should perhaps contact Spydersports in the US for advises regarding value, as they are specialised in this kind of things. You may also ask the auction house receipts of what had been done on this engine.

If the owner of the original car which it belonged is in the game, the price might be an issue at the end!

    Olivier.

Hi I wouldn't do a prebid, as this is not ebay.
I have bought and sold at Ladenburg in the past.
If you have (the highest) prebid the auction starts at that price - and if no other party bids it's yours.
In the past some stuff has sold for ridiculous money because the people thought it works like ebay and have put a very high prebid on some stuff no one else wanted.
So for the bidding process I'd contact them in advance and bid on the phone.
However - the catalogue text can be the text the seller provides - so be careful and take into considertaion what was written above.
There are some experts here in germany for the Königswellen Engines (e.g. Hloch, Reile or Pohl) perhaps one of them even knows your engine -I'd get in touch with every one of them in advance - but solely from the outside you can't tell that much.
    Cheers and good luck

    Uli
