    VW Golf SCRC

ProDrive - who built the 911 SCRS rally cars back in the day - have built a similar themed Golf SCRC. It won it's first rally (the APRC China Rally) with WRC driver Chris Atkinson at the wheel last weekend. It is built to open-class specs (so maybe we'll see one in North America next year), basically a WRC car with a larger engine.

Do the regs require these cars be 4 door?

Not sure what the thinking was on that. It's built for the China Rally Championship Open Class. If it's like Open Class in the US, pretty much anything goes.

Hmmm, you'd think a two door would be lighter and stiffer. Although with the extensive roll cages in these cars it's probably a moot point - so how about just better looking?

Don't know about the Golf chassis, but frequently 4 door tubs are stiffer. I know that was the case with BMW E36 models - the preferred race choice in those was the 4 door M3, not the coupe.I also recall that there was some question as to whether VW would even offer a 2 door in the Golf Mk7 body. That may have been a late addition, perhaps just for the USA.

Huh, seems counter intuitive, but interesting to hear. 4 doors make so much more sense in the real world, and would be my choice for a road car. And if VW is dropping the coupe the 4 door rally version fits in with marketing.

I wonder if they wanted the longer wheelbase for handling reasons? The main competition in China was 5-door Subie Sti's (which the Golf beat by over 5 minutes overall ).

I thought about that, but it seems bass-ackwards. For the roads they run on you would think a twitchy swb car would get around the corners better. You might be familiar with this concept??

I guess by "handling" I'm thinking more about compliance over the bumps, eliminating some of the skittishness of a SWB car.

I'm pretty sure that the wheelbase is the same for both 2 and 4 door models.
