So I may be wrong here, but if the 3rd piece with the engine number on it does not match the actual case halves is it really a 56 motor? Are there any date casting stamps on the block itself they indicate a 56 motor?

Made an adjustment to the description. Not sure if there is a date casting stamp to indicate a 56 engine. I could be wrong as I am NO EXPERT, but as you will see in the pictures the case has a 1600S stamp. This stamp should indicate that it is a 59 or later case. Only the front piece is for a 56.

Actually...maybe the 1600S started in 1957 looking at the 356A.com site.

The number on the top of the case indicates that it was manufactured sometime in late 56. I really like the work some PO did to remove the gland nut.
BFH and a chisel............some quality work there!
Yes, the 3 pieces are not matching but they are not too far apart in age.

    Regards
