    1972 Speedwell Morris Mini Clubman

Thought Id show off my other car here, its a money pit but then they all are! Its a 1972 Mini Clubman that is currently undergoing a full Speedwell Sprint engine conversion - that is a period engine improvement kit that could be bought back in the late 60's/early 70's for the Mini - Ive spent a long time finding all the bits to make a full kit! Her body work is in mint condition but the running gear was starting to show its age, so she is currently stripped to a shell and all components have been powder coated, just needs putting back together!

Before being taken off the road:

Back in 1977-78 I used to race my 356 Speedster against a Bug Eye Speedwell Sprite at Riverside Raceway... OK so I lied! It was NOT really a race he was Sooo much faster in the Sprite then my built Speedster. That was until he put the Bug Eyes on the bottom :-(...

I don't think the guy got hurt but he was never fast again... Too bad.

Funny about the pics, they are fine for me - must just be a compatibility issue with one of our monitors!

The Sprites were their other main product other than the Minis, Ive never seen one personally but there is a lot of stuff in the Speedwell catalogue that I own for the Sprites - they were pretty quick anyway, but Im surprised that they could beat a 356!

Nice! My first car ever was a 1970 Mini in the same colour of blue as your car. Bought it new after saving for many years. Wanted a Cooper S but they had stopped importing them to Canada by 1970, so I settled for the generic Mini and promptly went about cloning a Cooper as best I could.

    Frank,

The 356 Speedster (actually a Conv D) and the Speedwell Sprite with 1275cc were pretty equal in HP @ 115HP... But that Sprite was almost 400LBS lighter then the Porsche and he would easily pull away in the long straights at Riverside.

I believe it. The Tom Colby prepared Sprites were always very fast.

    Nice car!

My first car was a Mini Mayfair 1983. Certainly underpowered with only 43 hp but it is really fun when you are 18!
In fact, it is still a pleasure to drive a real Mini.

Clubman are quite unusual in France, and I have only seen two Clubman estate!
