    73 S - trunk lid underside finish?

Can anyone please confirm that the center section of the underside trunk panel was finished in a textured material (with the car's color then sprayed on top). In striping all the panels on my car, this center section indeed has such material, but I am not sure if it was original or done when the car was painted about 20 years ago. During the same re-paint, 'texture' was also applied to the lower portions of the front 'S' bumper and the L & R rear bumpers. I am pretty sure that was NOT done at the factory, but would appreciate that confirmation as well as I near the day of 'color' painting. Thanks!

You are correct, textured undercoat to the center underside of the hood, the back side of the front bumper,,,,but NOT the bumper front.

Ed, what year did they start with the texture under the hood? I have some hoods without it also? Always wondered this.

I think that may have been a LWB thing. For sure 70 and up, not sure about 69.

To add to that, RS's did not have the texture under the hood.

Ed - thank you for the confirmation...one other related question please. My rocker panels (from where they attached to the floor/pinch weld to half way up the torsion tube hole has the same material applied...I believe that too is also correct...can you confirm? Thank you.

Dr. B. Johnson´s restorers guide says: The inner surface, inside the structural framework had a textured sound deadening material. This was sand paper rough asphalt material on SWB 911 & 912´s with Porsche built bodies. Karmann built bodies and all LWB cars had a PVC material similar to the coating on the underbody.

The undercoat should go up to the level of the sheet metal screw holes for the side trim, which I think will be about halfway across the torsion bar holes.
