Question about air cleaner housings and engine noise

My 911T Targa came with older K&N flat-top air cleaners on the carburetors (on my car, Weber 40IDA's, not Zeniths). I would like to quiet things down a little. It has stock exhaust but is still pretty loud, and a lot of that noise seems to come from the intake. I assume the stock air cleaner housing with the snorkel is the quietest. Any chance rain hats would deflect noise and quiet things down a bit?

If anyone has a stock air cleaner housing they want to get rid of, please PM me.

    Noah,

If you're asking if 'rain hats' with just their standoffs instead of your K&N's will make it quieter the answer is NO!!!! IT WILL BE LOUDER!!!

The factory sometimes refers to the stock air cleaner as a 'silencer or muffler' ... The stock air cleaner is the quietest...

    Hope this helps

Are you guys talking about the same type of rain hats? The flat-top, no filter, rain hats, or the "Darth Vader" rain hats which cover the filters like an upside down saucepan?

Noah, I assume you have these:

Nobody here every flipped Dad's air cleaner cover over so you could hear the 4 barrel when you squashed the go pedal?

Yup! Dad's Vista Cruiser made quite an impression leaving the drive-in on Friday nights after that "mod".

I've been looking for a clean Vista Cruiser for years. Seems they have morphed into Nissans, Kia's, Toyota's or Hyundai's.

In case you find one, but incomplete: I have a spare Weber snorkel, that I might get rid of. Let me know.

    MFI Air Cleaner

On an another note I ventured to a friend's house to see how his "engine filtering" was coming. He had a custom made MFI air cleaner sans snorkel for his 3.2 short stroke that Auto Associates built.
It's a pretty piece of work that WILL flow air. Scott McPherson put it together and punched the back of the housing to get maximum flow into the engine. The front has stainless "hardware cloth" in the inlet.
For those using a cold start circuit I believe the tubes are intact. This engine uses a mechanical cold start mechanism from Henry Schmidt. Since his engine has all amber glass I think he's going to use rain hats made from that and sell this. If so I'll put in classifieds.

Caveat: This one will probably HOWL!
