    TX Hill Country - Random

To me (biased opining here) the 25 county area in Texas that simplistically is defined as the Hill Country is the most gorgeous piece of the state pie. Think limestone outcroppings, aquifer fed streams, bouquets of flowers randomly growing alongside the road, wildlife that is both native to the area as well as the savannahs of Africa....and the people. Folk that you would want to call neighbor no matter where you live.

Anyway, I've been living here for 6 years, driving all the roads, dodging all the deer and never pulled over to the shoulder randomly to take in the view. That changed last week by happenchance; pulling over to take a call. Sometimes the blur you see everyday at 60mph becomes scenery when you're standing still.

This thread will be my attempt to capture what I stop and see in the Texas Hill Country:

First set - HWY 183, just north of Vanderpool.

John, the only thing that would have made those photos better would have been if you had been in your '67.

Looking forward to your future postings! If I don't see you sooner I will see you in March.

John, Great pictures. Somewhere there are a few pictures of the entire HCR group lined up that hill. Its a great vantage point for some picture.

I have to agree. The terrain and roads in the Hill Country are unmatched.

We are doing a drive this weekend but will only go as far as Blanco. Come meet us for a late breakfast if you get the chance.

Did a nice 182 mile jaunt today, hitting all three of the Twisted Sisters (Hwys 337,336 & 335) with a lunch stop @ The Frio Canyon Motorycycle Stop in Leakey. What made this run different from my past Sister drives was the "shortcut" I took off of 335 just north of Barksdale. Saw a sign saying HWY 2631 on the right as I was heading north on 335; decided to take it. A high speed run on 2 lane blacktop was, after 6-7 miles, exchanged for 10-25 mph caliche / dirt / cattle path driving/sliding for about 8 miles. The SUV ride height courtesy of the high sidewall Vreds ensured I would not hole a tank filled with an important liquid. Once done with the Dakar type rally, back on a two lane hardtop now named HWY 3235, which tied into my second favorite Sister - HWY 336.

This shortcut exposed me to some of the most beautiful country I've seen in my 7 years out here. The road less travelled does bear fruit on occasion. Highly recommend it; just make sure to check your ride height beforehand and not be adverse to some new "patina" added on the nose.

Couple of pics showing the country. First pic is my required tank up @ The Old Timers in Medina. A great old shop only needing Barney Fife sitting out front to complete the setting. Rest of the pics are from the section described above. JB
