Carpet Police - Need Help Identifying Original Carpet

Was very excited to buy an original, used carpet for my '71 T. Seller said that it came out of a '71, and all I was interested in was the driver's mat, as my mat has the typical wear south of the heal pad. Thrilled when I received the mat pictured, as after cleaning it was mint. And then I realized that the carpet fibers were slightly different than the original mat for my '71.

Anywho, so what do I have here? Is it an "S" mat, or...? What years?

    Pics:

    - My original mat on the left, with the one in question on the right
    - '71 pedal assembly carpet (that came with the mat, and matches my carpet) on the left, with mat in question on the right
    - Close-up of fibers
    - Overall

Beige slippers are not for sale, so don't even ask.

BTW, would LOVE an original mat for my '71, if anyone has one.

Thanks, in advance, for any help.

    Cheers,

    John

Thanks for your thoughts, gentlemen - very interesting. Some more pics that will hopefully illuminate the discussion:

    1. Driver's mat in question on the left, original carpet on the right.
    2. Close-up of original carpet.
    3. Close-up of "new" original mat.

My car is nice, 60k-mile virgin (at least she told me that), one registered owner (prior to me) girl. Garaged entire life, never parked in Arizona, etc. What's interesting is that, aside from the aforementioned wear mark on the original driver's mat, the carpet is completely even (including the rear bits underneath the front seats, which see neither use nor sun).

In addition, my carpet perfectly matches the "1971 set" that I bought (aside from the driver's mat in question). I wonder if Eric's point about the supply for that batch is the issue here? Curious that both sets are virtually interchangeable (excluding the driver's mat).

    Keep it coming...

    Cheers,

    J

    Eric,

The more I compare your pics to mine it makes me think that my original carpet is indeed the "S" velour, which makes sense, given that my '71 T is a heavily-optioned model (including the "S" appearance group, etc.)

I'm now starting to believe that the "new" original driver's mat is a mint, perlon T/E carpet, and the rest of the carpet it came with is "S" velour.
