The Exploding Pirelli Spare tire Trick

When I pulled out my spare tire to examine the part number for another Registry member, I discovered that the 35-year-old Pirelli I had for a spare had taken upon itself to explode. Fortunately, nothing las was damaged, nor was anyone injured. I am glad that I did not have to mount it on the car in an emergency.

Show this to all those concours whackos that advise/tell/encourage people to mess around with ancient tires.

To me anything older then 5 years should not be driven-in-anger on, anything older then 10 years shouldn't be inflated. There are new tires available in practically every classic size, so there's no excuse to be endangering people or cars with that old rubber.

PS I just saw the speed rating on that spare. 88S. That incorrect for any 911. Why mount it at all?

It was an emergency situation, where the good stuff was not available. I was living in California, under a Chippie-enforced 55 mph speed limit.

Anyhow, the replacement is a Michelin XAs from Coker.

As a footnote, I took it to a Porsche mechanic recommended tire guy today and had them mount it -- except that they mounted the new XAs inside-out.

So, back to the tire guy tomorrow!
