Whats the value of a low miles rebuilt 1965 911 Engine?

When it rains, it pours, lately 1969 911E Coupes.

Yesterday I bought a 1969 911E coupe - second one in the last month! Funny thing about the most recent one is that this is the second time I've bought this car. I bought it 8 years ago as a project, but a friend bought it from me as soon as I picked it up. Last week I mentioned that I had just bought another 1969 911E and he asked if I wanted the one I sold him too? It is sitting in almost the exact spot in his shop where we put it then, untouched.

Having a proclivity for E models, of course I said yes. So I paid him exactly double the price he paid me way back when.

One of the interesting things about this car is that it came with it's original engine on a pallet, complete with MFI. Currently in the car is a 1965 911 engine, #903089. I almost kept that engine when I sold the car before in case I found an early car that needed a great one. Now I doubt that I will be finding a suitable car any time soon, if ever.

So I plan to sell the 1965 Engine. It is a complete, sweet running engine with less than 10,000 miles on a first rate build by a legendary, factory trained, racing mechanic who emigrated in the 60's from Germany. It does have Webers instead of the Solex's. My thought is to sell it with/or without the Webers. I know he "built" it and he liked factory, E pistons and S cams in his engines, but hope the build sheet is still in the paperwork because I don't remember. I noticed it still retains the early sandcast fan housing, cam towers, etc.

I see crazy prices for these engines, just as cores, and trying to figure out what a fair price would be?

    Actually a '66 engine.

It will be interesting to hear opinions regarding values.

    Best of luck to you.

    Frank, thank you for bringing up an interesting point;

A 911 friend and I were discussing that last week. Some books show it as a 1965 built 1966 engine while others show it as a 1965 engine, including "The Porsche Family Tree" booklets printed by Porsche in the 80's.

    So is #903089 technically a 1965 or 1966 engine?

Either year is fine with me, I just want to advertise it correctly when it comes time to sell it.

At this point I'm inclined to just call it a 911 engine built in 1965.

Your engine is probably build late October, for a car w/ a VIN around 902900 (+/- 50).

As for price. Since you are missing the solex set up (which is like an extra $7500), I think a fair price for a recent (proper!) rebuild solex engine for the not matching car is something like $20K.

    Just my $.02

I will buy as many used Solex systems as you can find for $7500. Cash today.

I was at a well known Porsche restoration shop about two weeks ago and they paid less than that for a complete set up. A fully rebuild set was offered to him for $10K. I guess it's all about who (in case he) you know ..

I have heard 4 opinions on value of this engine:
    1.) $20,000
    2.) $20,000
3.) $35,000 - apparently a very similar engine (freshly built to S specs) for sale in Europe - but I couldn't find it, the person who mentioned this one also said he thought it was 35,000 Euros. If it sold, I would be very curious as to what it really sold for. Seems like a crazy number to me, particularly if it was really in Euros.
    4.) $25,000

I'm considering taking it to Rothsport and having Jeff test it on his dyno. Knowing past engines that Nick built he was partial to E P&C's and S cams so I would expect this one to be close to 200hp with the Webers at the flywheel.

No. 3 on your list was sold by Lars, it had a Solex set up. It was offered for 35K euro (I think you can say $ = euro for these parts) but have not read what it sold for. Also was it a low number, like 1100 something, so a "real" MY 65 engine

    Hello Richard,

I'm not clear on what you mean by that statement. I'm heading back to Europe in a few months and I wish dollars equaled Euros again. Right now it looks like 35,000 Euros would cost me $43,550+
