Thread: 1968 911S 11800890 LWB possible?

    1968 911S 11800890 LWB possible?

I am looking at a what is advertised as a 1968 911, the VIN is 11800890. The car requires total restoration and is completely disassembled. It comes with two engines and one transmission. I have confirmed one of the engines is a 1969 T motor. The other motor is not accessible at the current time.

The VIN seems to indicate it is a 68 911S but what baffles me is that the car is a LWB with the dual battery boxes. I thought this started in 1969 but is it possible some late 1968 model 911's incorporated the changes? The only VIN I can find is the one etched in front of the smugglers box and it seems to match the title (but it is not easy to read due to multiple layers of paint). The metal VIN plate is missing just behind the front bumper. Any thing else I can check? The car is currently a shell so its hard to look for the obvious visual differences.

I live in Canada and am pretty sure this car came from Europe and wasn't sold in the USA.

    I did find a 1968 911S LWB for sale:

Is this possible or am I dreaming....

I hope to post some pics tonight.

There will also be a number stamped in the metal on the lower right area of the dash. This should be just to the right of where ash tray sits and below the radio opening. I am curious to hear what that number is for this car.

I posted a pic of the VIN. I need to take a closer look at it but I suspect the VIN was welded in from another vehicle. I can't know for sure until I grind in the area but I think this a 69-73 T.

    That VIN does look suspect.

Is the car for which you sent the link actually an early 69 car? I know many folks in Europe refer to manuf. date.

The dash number will tell you if it is a long wheel base car.

Thank you for the feedback thus far.

I purchased the car + parts and with winter weather approaching I didn't have much time to get everything stuffed into the garage. It was too dark to get the dash number but will make it a priority for tomorrow.

I believe I have a 71T body with a 68 911S VIN welded in. I found a box of gauges and they were all date stamped around April/71, I also found a 911T glove box door. I suspect the original 68S was wrecked (or rusted away) and used as a organ donor, but this is just a guess. Within the parts I have interior trim such as door cards, suspension components, door handles etc. consistent with a 1968 911. I also received a plywood box with a 911 motor in it complete with carbs, the serial # is 4081082 which is consistent with a 1968 911S.

I don't know where to go from here. How valuable are the motor and parts? Should I use the 71 tub or try to find a 68T tub...

If you have 68S parts, they could be quite valuable as they are rare. Maybe you can find a body to match the motor.

    Good luck

With that welded in VIN, methinks the original chassis is long gone...

Finding A body might be one thing…..finding THE body may be quite another…if it even still exists.
