Not sure I’d want it but it’s out there.

That car is like a real life Christine, it has supposedly killed far more than just James Dean. Buyer beware!

Ok, It looks like we are entering the home stretch in terms of the chassis being operational. Geoff has working brakes, exhaust, shifting, engine and gearbox in place. Some of these things sound simple, except when you realize there is no mechanism for a lot of it. Brakes sure, they are brakes. But shifting on a hybrid chassis with components that are new to it. For example, the linkage and shifting that works on the 519 doesn't work on the 644, which I am using, so Geoff had to do a lot of thinking outside the box and trail and error to see what works. Probably a lot of what the Factory had to do when they made the first 550's.
Better him than me. I was recently told by a mechanic who I know really well that I'm a good finder, an ok salesman, but an awful mechanic. He told me politely to play to my strengths!

Ignorant question , but I’m interested: won’t “standard” (eg Beck) components fit in most cases ?
Or are the dimensions materially different ?

No, all the systems for the BECK are set up for the VW Type 1 gearbox, not a 356 gearbox. The guys at BECK had done this a couple of times and told me what they did and we followed their instructions for how to set up the gearbox but there was never a good system for shifting. Real Porsche linkage is all set up for the 519 split case gearbox, so I went to the guys reproducing that stuff and they said it wouldn't work on a 644, which I was using. We were able to adapt a cable shift system which seems to be working. I may fine tune it later to make it look a little cooler, it's rather Dune Buggy looking now. But the important thing was to get everything operational, then I can work on it over time.
But yes, I too thought I could use the BECK setup, so it was a major setback when I realized I couldn't.

Chassis is done, picked it up at Geoff's today, just missing the blizzard that is hitting tonight. A Nor'Easter, they are calling it.

Next stop is Proshaper where we will skin this baby!

And you could resist a small road test?!
    Incredible

Nice step and I'm looking forward for the next one.
