    Help Cylinder ID 80m

Hope that someone can help me out to ID this cylinder.
Casting number has been cut off half way on the bottom by an enthusiastic , no exact casting number
Looks different on top compared to the standard Biral 80ZD3 (left cylinder).

    Thnx

    "By an enthusiast"?

You know WHY they machined that off, right?

    Wish i did Frank....
Maybe to increase compres ratio 😄
These came out of a large pile of stock i bought many years ago.
In this stock were a lot of 906 & 911st parts wich already sold some year ago.

    You can identify the cilinder?

surmising that machining was done to bring compression ratio back to a more realistic number using different pistons. Does the overall height measurement (base of cyl to head sealing surface) compare to a standard cylinder?

The "Enthusiast" was the Factory. The Biral cylinder on the right is from an early 2.0 as it looks identical to the ones in my 05/65 car, including the numbers being half cut off.

I've seen a lot of cylinders, but none with what looks like the top fin missing. Was the cylinder hight question answered?

I have multiple sets of each and if I recall correct by head does the cylinder on the left have 13 cooling ribs, and the one on the right 9. That is the way they were designed.

All cylinders are machined like the one pictured.

Learned from 356 rider that the one on the right are actually older style than the one on the left.

I happen to be doing the engine on my '65 now. It has its original pistons/cyl. The cylinder has 13 fins if you count the bottom one which is tiny.

I had a set of those cylinders with raised centers that came from a 65, 3018XX They are probably the first version.
