Thread: VIN lookup from Engine Number?

    VIN lookup from Engine Number?

So... I have a little bit of a different request than normal...

I'm trying to trace my grandfathers 1976 Blue 911 2.7 Coupe.

All I have to go on is a picture and a UK registration plate. (PAY 120R)

Using the UK lookup up service I've found out the car last changed owners in 2007.

The same check provided the engine number (Engine No. 6362727) but no VIN

Any idea how I could use the engine number to trace the VIN?

    Best Regards,

All you can ascertain from the engine no. 6362727 is that it was a 'base' model (165bhp) '76 911.

If you know it was a Coupe then the VIN will be in the range 911 630 0001 - 911 630 1868

There were 3029 of those engines installed in '76 & although engine numbers weren't always fitted 'in sequence' with the chassis numbers (VIN's) & the same engine type was fitted to '76 911 'base' Targa models, you can reasonably say that the VIN that received that engine was near to the end of the range mentioned above.

I've been offered a rebuilt 1972 911T engine with the serial 6122563. I would like to locate the original chassis and see if the owner wants to reunite them. Any way of doing this?

According to the DVLA website, the car is here in the UK but is currently 'off the road' (its status is declared as 'SORN' - statutory off road notification) which typically means it's either undergoing restoration or other work.

Its last MOT certificate (compulsory annual test) expired on 24th August 2013.

    Great info Andy,

It's exciting to know it still exists.

Now for the tricky bit... Finding and contacting the owner.

The 1976 Blue 911 was not his only Porsche...

He had a 911T in the early 70's... unfortunately the reg (JRS 911F) is no longer with the car so I have no way of tracing it (unless anyone know of a way?)

I have a connection to find the chassis number from engine number. Not cheap. If you're interested, PM me.
