    Hockey puck vs batwing

Is there a logic in horn buttons on SWB cars? I see hockey pucks and bat wings. Were the hockey pucks for 912 and bat wings for 911? Was the batwing an 'upgrade' or was there a change that is more build date related?

I believe the batwing replaced the puck in 67(?) Please correct me if I am wrong.

    Jules,

I'm glad you started this thread because I have been wondering the same. I have a '68 911L (US-version, VIN# 11805200, production date 2/13/68), and I have the original wood steering wheel and a hockey puck. I've got slides (yes, actual slides...) of my car from when my uncle bought it in '72 showing this set up, and nothing in the extensive history indicates any changes between the 1st owner and him (I bought it from my uncle in '92).

Does anyone have the details on when/why the set up changed?

I think the puck was standard and possibly the only choice in 68, never noticed a batwing on a 68. Before that, I have seen something show the batwing as a $5 deluxe option, but I've had a few 67 912's, and all came with the batwing on black steering wheels, most 65/66 cars I've seen had pucks. My best guess would be puck standard thru 66, optional/with wood wheels, and that the puck was the only offer in 68(part of the new safety changes).

The 65-68 Parts Catalogue has the puck as standard for the base 911 and the 912, whilst the batwing is shown as optional on the base 911 and standard on 911L, 911T and 911S.

I can confirm the batwing being an add on on the 912 in 65, called "Signaltaste"

My understanding is that in the 1965 Model Year, all horn buttons were "hockey pucks." All my 1965 brochures show the hockey puck in 911s.

In 1966, the "hockey puck" was standard on the 912. The options catalog (courtesy of Charlie White) shows that the batwing or butterfly horn was option # 9266 (DM 21.00 or US$5.25) on the 912:

The bei 911 ohne Mehrpreis means on the 911 without increased price but probably means it was standard unless somebody was adamant that they wanted a 911 with a "hockey puck" (doubtless without a lower price).

If it helps, my US delivered 68L (11805114) also has the batwing, it would seem Bantam's explanation makes sense.

I have been told that the hockey puck gained favor with the sports purpose and rally set as it was lighter and did not tend to get tangled in gloves and sleeves as the batwing could. I think the R and maybe the rally spec TR had the horn button on the dash.
