    73 S - painting cost estimates...

My 73S is in finished primer (tub/shell, plus separately the fenders, doors, trunk lid, engine lid, front bumper and rear bumpers) and ready for taping, sealer, color and clear. It is ready to be put into a booth and sprayed...no further body work, sanding, priming, disassembly etc. is needed. I would appreciate hearing from anyone in the business or owner who may have had an early 911 done in the same fashion as to cost. The car will NOT need to be reassembled or wet sanded and buffed...I'll be doing that. I know what an estimate for materials for this job will cost...just trying to baseline an estimate of the labor for such a job, and recommendations are welcome within a few hundred miles of Northern Virginia. Thank you

I think you are going to have a hard time finding a painter who will guarantee his paint job over an unknown preparation. You might have to accept you will not hold him responsible for any future flaws.

+1 But what i would do, is spec exactly the paint brand and color, drying method...everything.. and have that in writing.

Thanks for your thoughts. While the painter will not have done the preparation, the process and materials - all backed up by endless photos - is not unknown and I'm not a beginner in this. I've frankly not had an issue of finding very reputable painters who are willing to do the job, and I have an appointment set. My post was to get a sense of what others may have paid for such a job with all the truly laborious work already done. Anyway, I am very happy with who I have chosen - folks who are very enthusiastic about the work I have done, the car itself, and because of the work I have done, they are making themselves available on a weekend (shop is normally closed) to do just my car. Side-by-side heated downdraft booths will work perfectly for having the car in one booth and her many parts in the other.

$1000 or more? for the paint, and perhaps another $1000 for paint booth and spraying. Hard to for me to give you a great estimate as for a recent job I had some prep work done, and am paying for colorsanding and polishing as well. Have previously paid around $600 just to have someone paint it in their shop w/o a paint booth.

What did you get for estimates?

I've done this before, but only for track cars. I would never do this on a car of significant value. 90% of pro painters will simply refuse to deal with somebody else's prep.

I have friends who have done this sort of thing with a high volume shop like Maaco, One Day or Earl Scheib, bringing in their own premium paint and spiffing the spray guy...
