Thread: Cover plate for shift rod connector

Question Cover plate for shift rod connector

I'm finally completing the "collection of stuff" for my 1967 911S Targa project. I just received the appropriate cover plate for the shift rod connection, and I understand that it has vent slots for release of heat and gas from the Webasto Heater. At least I thought I understood that. But when I received the cover, it has the typical thick tar backing which would have prevented any venting. Can some expert provide me with the logic of the tar backing material, and just why the cover has venting slots if it cannot vent?

    Thanks in advance.

I believe that cover should have a "screen" material behind it so small items can't fall through, but air can.

The tar board pops out without much difficulty but if the car wasn't originally equipped with the aux heater then it would have been closed off as you describe.

I don't have a Webasto heater in my car, but from looking at the setup, it appears the heater (and later the A/C fan) draws in air at the front of the tunnel through an opening in the smuggler's box. This allows the air from the rear of the cabin to be drawn in through the slots in the cover plate, warmed by the heater, and then re-circulated by exiting at the vents at the front of the cabin.

Also, when you mentioned "for the release of heat and gas", what "gas" are you referring to? Surely you did not mean the exhaust gas from the heater ?

    Hi Frank

I have never had a car with a Webasto heater, and all of the covers that I am familiar with have had the tar insert. The bottom line was that I did not know what the hell I was referring to. Another live and learn with the help of the Registry. And, no, I did not expect the "gas" to come from the heater. That usually comes from my wife.

My 67S has the vents and the screen, but does not have a gasoline heater.
