    Swepco question: 911 transaxle

When my 2.2 liter power train was redone, the transmission was reassembled and filled with Red Line 75-90 synthetic gear lube.
Recent driving, and comparing with my 1973 915 box, says the shifting effort is just terrible! Especially the 1-2 shift, hard as a rock most of the time, and getting into first at stop is a PITA as well.
I am planning to change over to Swepco and I have a unused gallon in my stores. Just looked, and I seem to have a gallon of Swepco 212, not 201.
My question is, the 212 seems to be a heavier weight, 80-120 and it contains Moly. should I use this? Will I be happy with it? I have had it so long that I no longer recall just why I bought it. It may no be a good idea for a 901/911 box, or it may be the new way to go.
Any enlightenment will be greatly appreciated, I trust the wisdom of the assemblage here..

All steel-synchro Porsche 911 gearboxs built before 1987 should be filled with dinosaur bones. Proper gear oil ... NO SYNTHETIC ... 80/90 GL5 ... race or street.

Borg/Warner-style gearboxes (G50 and later) need a synthetic GL5 ... I use Redline 75/90NS in all applications and add friction modifier as needed for cars equipped with limited slip.

I wouldn't put Swepco in my car if the company paid me ... I've had nothing but foul experiences with that product. In my and my customers' early street and race cars we use either Castrol, Shell, or Penzoil 80/90 GL5 (whatever we can get at the time of ordering) or the Redline for the later cars.

As long as it meets the requirements above ... GL5 dinosaur oil.

What is the thickest viscosity oil I can use? My car seems to shift better in the morning upon startup and all winter with the colder ambient temps. I have to touch a different gear syncro and double clutch for downshifting all summer long.

For years Swepco was the stuff everyone used for the older 911s. When (if) did that change and why?? I have used it for 25 years in several rebuilt trans and never had to touch them again (20+ yrs). One (901) saw heavy track use and still shifts like butter. 915 is a little stiffer buy I think that is their nature too.

I'm another long term Swepco user, 201 80/90 wt in my 73, and 210 80/140 wt in our race car with a 915. Gordon

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I have learned a lot of new information Tom this thread. I did search on the subject prior to my initial posting.
I have Swepco 201 in my 915 box and am very pleased with the workings of that tranny, so I was hoping for a magic fix for my recalcitrant 911.
I have some Valvoline 80-90 GL Dino here, so I will give it a try. It's not expensive so what the heck, it won't ruin the transmission I'm sure...

Discussing oil is a lot like discussing religion. There are very few empirical facts and a lot of emotion.
