Thread: Blue Tip Hirschmann Antenna?

    Blue Tip Hirschmann Antenna?

Sierra Madre has for sale what they call a Blue Tip Hirschmann Antenna for Porsche 356, but I assume it could go in an early 911 (IF CORRECT)

I asked for pictures and this is what they sent?

I've never seen something like this, I'd appreciate your comments.

    Thanks

IMHO, the antenna looks pretty good, except for the Blue tip. That looks as phoney as a $3.00 bill.

I agree, it looks vey cheap, and for $195 or whatever the number, I0'm probably better off with a $20 manual Hirschmann.

Also the blue tip should have a chrome cap on the top of the tip, with 2 small cutouts on each side to allow an antenna key to pull it up.

That is also what I've seen, but I thought those were Bosch antennas...

Agree with Jim and Soterik, other than the plastic tip that looks pretty good. If you get the $20 ones they don't have the taller plastic cap, at least not any that I've seen.

It may be possible to pop off the blue tip and replace it with the correct black Hirschmann tip. At least on the 911 version the top is designed to pop off to allow switching between locking and non-locking tips.

The other issue is the diameter of the shaft. I had a newer Hirschmann antenna and the base was a smaller diameter. The correct bracket (not the one shown in the photo above) would not fit snugly on the shaft.

EDIT: One other minor issue. The cable should be a light grey if I remember correctly.

Correct bracket (photo stolen from another thread):

I've seen two varieties of "blue tip" antennas on early 911's. The most common, as referenced by Eric, has a metal cap on the tip but there is another version that has a different tip. I have one on one of my best original cars and I have another one on the shelf removed from a barn find car many years ago. Off the top of my head I'm not sure how much they resemble the SM repro pictured above but I'll take a photo when I'm in my shop this weekend and post it for reference.

Thanks. Those seem to be Bosch, though I can't read the logo on the third one from left. That one seems to have a similar tip to the one SM has
