    engine case matching halves

On engine cases I always see a matching code on the top of the 2 halves, see 2 examples below.
Is there a meaning of the codes used? Sofar I could not match it to anything reasonable and they seem to be random. Anybody know more about this?

Added when the two haves were married together. If you had six halves sitting on the floor, you could tell which ones went together.

Jacques, they are sequential pairing numbers, stamped during the machining process.
The numbers are not coded, and have no meaning other than to identify two items machined together to create a single, separable engine case.
