    Air Cleaner Base Query

Calling our carb experts - sorting through the shed the other day I came across two pairs of metal air cleaner bases that I got in a bulk parts buy, I noticed that they have three locating holes for each trumpet and don't have any holes inbetween the trumpets; I assumed this might be a Weber/Zenith thing but checking the parts catalogue I could only find one part number for the metal bases (and then one for the plastic bases) from '65 to '73.

Couple of photos below together with one of a pair of the usual ones for comparison.

    Anyone enlighten me please?

Reminds me of the base bolt pattern for slide valve stacks,,,,but they didn't have mountings at the top for air cleaner bases. So,,,,I don't really know????

Thanks for the reply......that and the lack of any others at least means I haven't overlooked an obvious answer! The fact that I have two pairs (actually there is also a single fifth one as well) would suggest that this wasn't some local 'one off' modification.

Had a closer look at them and how they differ to the usual ones. The main trumpet holes are 60mm diameter compared to the standard Weber/Zenith at 47mm; other than the lack of holes between the trumpets and the three rather than two locating holes for the trumpets they are identical in terms of size/clip location/construction/finish.

    So, can anyone help?

    Thanks

Paul doesn't know...neither Weber nor Zenith bases; nor MFI of the OEM variety. Spigot spacing appears to be quite close. Look to be MFI of some sort per Ed's comment since there is no provision for venting as required for carburetors. Slide valve MFI had spacing equal to that of the intake ports (vertical air flow path into the cylinders).

Not slide valve, but high butterfly. Like SCRS with two piece air horn. 4 hole mounting from throttle body to intermediate air horn piece and 3 hole mounting to top piece of air horn. Same spacing as street MFI. The air cleaner base of the SCRS has a much larger/wider dimension but could of been an early trial part or who knows? Gordon

Here is a picture of my race engine with HI Butterfly. I made an intermediate piece similar to SCRS, then use an ITG filter base with air horn on top of that and the ITG filter. That top picture of the base in post #1 would fit right on top of my intermediate pieces. Gordon
