    SWB Engine Lid Grills

Not much to do with lights, but a man needs variety in his life. I recently came across a cache of SWB engine lid grills and it looks like I enough to restore 4-5 of them.

A lot of dis-assembly and reassembly and before I embark on this project I thought I would check to see if there is any interest. I don't know the costs and time involved yet so I don't have a firm price in mind, but I'm thinking in the $800-$900 range. Anyone interested?

    Thanks,
    John

    Time out!

So you want to be The Light Guy

    and

    The Grill Guy?

I believe this decision needs to be brought before the board before you self appoint.

(John, I marvel at the level of patience you must have; you get the "Job Award". As in oldest book of the Old Testament. That Job.)

    Frank...

The fate of a hyperactive guy with a bad back. I have to be inert a lot of the time and I *need need need* something productive to do. I've been physical all of my life and this old age stuff is a bitch! The grills rival H1's for their Rubik cube like assembly which means they should keep me out of mischief for some time (fortunately the slats are numbered).

I have a thought... If I'm the Light Guy and the Grill Guy there's one specialty that makes sense - through-the-grill lights! Have to look into that.

    Cheers,
    John

P.S. I'm probably going to be an ace on the jigsaw puzzles at the home. I'll be known as the Puzzle Guy.

Looks like I'm going to have a lot of practice with grills. A customer/friend (seems like most of my customers become friends given that we've all fellow enthusiasts) just contacted me and has four grills that need restoring. That was followed by a phone call from another customer/friend who needs one restored.

    So....

Evidently I am offering a new service. In addition to having some restored grills for sale I will be restoring them for those who have cores as well. I will put information up on the website soon.

Thanks to everyone for the support - I really appreciate it.

    Cheers,
    John

I have refurbished two of these and 'enjoyed' the process!
If you ever work out how to repair/replace the mesh sandwiched (riveted) between the strips of aluminium without destroying the integrity of the whole, I'll be mighty interested in the process!

    Stephen...

It seems like every restoration project has a crux to it. For example, with H1's it's the spring adjuster. I think you've identified it with engine lid grills. Fortunately it looks like the black mesh on the five cores that I'm starting with are OK. But it's probably inevitable that I'm going to face having to replace the screen mesh at some point. It really does look tricky, both where the mesh attaches between the aluminum strips that comprise the main frame and where the black end trim pieces are mounted. I'll start with the low hanging fruit and work my way up the tree. <g>

I very much appreciate the enthusiastic response. I'm at my limit for grills right now and won't be accepting any more SWB grill restorations for the time being. Still taking on new headlamp and turn signal projects.

    Thanks,
    John

Hi John, I have a grill that needs restoration. I'm not in a rush since it is in 'not too bad shape', so whenever you might be ready to take on another grill, I will be happy to send mine to you :-)
