    Too many shiny cars...

Just a thought... is the whole value extravaganza thing ruining the patina of the 911 history? I see less and less and less cars with any kind of fade, wear, and scruff. Everything is getting restored/sold or restored/pampered. I'm not saying that these fixed up shiny baubles arent being driven, but are we losing something?

What made me think of this was this photo... why not just run it like this? Make a driver... I know its missing a fender bumper and hood whatever, but man, wouldnt that be neat?

An uncared for car is an embarrassment to the car and its owner. The orange car looks fine--brown one--no.

I think it depends on the circumstances of how a car got to where it is. A car that lived its life in arizona, and just has the paint burned off and cracks in the dash and destroyed seats is alright in my book.

Careful what you ask for, the VW culture appears to be suffering from not enough shiny cars.
Some there advocate faking patina for a faux historic weathered look.

    Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Man, am I embarrassed!
My 71 911T Brown car, peeling paint, too many exhaust pipes, flared fenders, wrong engine grille, ugly 73 bumper guards, non-numbers matching engine, date stamps on the 15 X 8 rear wheels are too late, brown seats from a 86 Carrera, most of the other brown interior parts are from a 74 911, stupid faded brown "Clover Enclosure", 450,000 miles, cracked dash, headliner falling off. I could go on and on.
It will embarrass any pristine, numbers matching S or RS, when it comes to actually driving the thing, though.

    Ciao

Absolutely agree. I hate to think about what some of the restored cars looked like before with "beat-up" original paint and worn original interiors, etc. Thankfully the original, but scruffy-looking ones are being appreciated for what they are now.

My 71T - originally light yellow, with S trim pkg/bumper - wears a black respray with peeling clear. Everything that matters to me will be brand-new, but when I put it back together, it won't be getting a paint job.. I'm going to work with what I've got. I can always pull it apart and do a perfect respray when it comes time to sell. In the meantime I'll be driving a polarizing car and freaking out the squares, rather than "the guy in the yellow one"

I get the part about driving your car, I drive mine all year around in Chicago. I still want them in at least #3 condition, I think the condition of the car kind of reflects the condition of the owner:
