    And I witnessed a very early 68S with a 67S mirror, so anything is possible with Porsche.

    so the 67S mirror is chrome stem with pebble black housing? Normal 67 are all chrome?

    My '67 came with that same chrome/plastic mirror. The mirror looked like it had been on since day one (chrome and screws all pitted, plastic housing falling apart from sun damage), but I still wondered if the PO had changed the mirror. My car was built July 04, 1967 and I believe these late cars had these mirrors. I have searched and searched a lot of pics relating to '67 cars and I found quite a few that had these mirrors. I believe it is a combination of the early '67 and the '68 safety mirrors. The true '68 mirrors are different as they are a one year only breakaway mirror. See pic of '68 style below:
