Thread: Standard vs. "S" trim on a 1973 911 E

    Standard vs. "S" trim on a 1973 911 E

Bit of a dilemma here...I know most U.S. models came with S Trim bundled under a package name. We have a 1973 911 E that is in fact a U.S. car. It (per the kardex) was only ordered with light alloy wheels (M400) and Tinted windscreen (M568) and C02 (I believe a U.S. emissions thing). That's it.

The car has 79k orig. miles. The deco trim is the non-S skinny trim that the big rubber bumpers fit nicely over. Also, it has a steel S spoiler. Finally, the gauges look like non-S guages (see pics below). They don't look like they've ever been removed. In fact, the whole interior is original and unrestored.

    Any thoughts would be great.

    Thanks.

    Paul

That has got to be a rare bird! A 911E without S trim. It does appear to have leather seats from the factory, though.

    Don't do anything to it!

    Hi Jim,

Yes, factory leather seats are on the build sheet. the question is do all U.S. E's from 1973 have S deco trim or was it part of a common ordered package like comfort package, etc.?

    Thanks.

In earlier models, yes, the S trim was included as standard equipment on 911Es. Apparently, that is not the case with 73Es. Your car is very unique and should be kept in it's current form, IMHO. It is very cool! It kind of bears the question "What was the original owner thinking? He could have had the complete S trim package for a very few dollars more.

Good question...not sure why it was such a bare bones ordered E...usually that is more common on a T. The car's build date was June of 1973...so it was also towards the very end of production.

Actually, it looks like leather, but it is the base model padded wheel made out of rubber that has faux stitching to look like leather. Once again, another clue to the base model ordering of this E.

    Definitely, a head scratcher...

Yes -opposite to 1972- in 1973 the E (as the T) needed to order the S trim as an option.

1973E did now came standard with the spoiler (optional on 1972E) but in small trim, only the 1973 911S came standard with S-spoiler with S trim.
1973 911E came standard with ATS Wheels 6Jx15.

You could order a "Comfort" Equipment for 911T and 911E (then with S trim, S-spoiler, S dials etc.) or order options individually.

Below is a 1973E RoW on a period factory press photo. Brian Long page 56.
