New Jersey Title Help - OLD VIN

I have a Title issue with a car I have purchased where the original NJ title had a wierd VIN on it and My state misread it. Is anybody out there knowledgable with NJ VIN numbers?

Here's what i have. The Car has a five digit Porsche number stamped on its door plate and below the fuel tank. It's from 1957, so the five digit isn't a concern.

But it must have been a problem in NJ.

I have a copy of the title NJ issued in 1990 with POR33 33357 shown as the vin for 11 digits versus the stamped 5.

POR and 57 were added to the 33333 vin number stamped to the car. (okay 33333 isn't the real vin, i'll save that for later).

When the car was titled in the early 2000's in a differnt state, they used 33357 as the vin number and they didn't do a check of the vehicle at the time, etc.. I just found the problem.

I'm working on it with a very helpful person in DMV here, she really is trying to help, but i also need to figure out why NJ would do what they did.

So, I need help from anyone who knows how NJ assigned VIN numbers. Why would they add POR and 57 to the number along with the space? Help me, anybody....

yes i think i know the issue.
Your '57 Porsche's Vin 33357 was already in N.J. Motor Vehicles's Vin database registered as something like a boat, trailer, motor cycle or whatever when the PO tried to title that '57 Porsche in the state of N.J.

So, what NJ Motor vehicles does in that situation is to create a title with an updated Vin using the following:

Vin (1-3) First three digits of the vehicle manufacturer = POR
    Vin (4-5) Vehicle year = 57
Vin (remainder) - vehicles vin number

thanks, sounds about right, but the 10-11 digits are the year.

Anybody know how to officially detail this so i can get My State to help me change the vin to the five digits it should be?

They keep saying Provenance needs to be established.

i guess if you say you heard it from someone on a Porsche online forum it may not be enough Provenance.
perhaps if you call NJ DMV explaining the situation they may have some sort of document that details what I tried to summarazie above.
