'. . . 1959 Standard VW Microbus with under 25,000 original miles.
This bus has never been restored. The interior is all original (mats, panels, upholstery, everything) except for the headliner which was replaced within the last 2 years due to dry rot. All interior paint is original, even the pop out window frames, the floors are unbelievable.
Virtually no bodywork has ever been done to this bus. The only repair was a very minor repair from when the original nose emblem was stolen off the bus in 1987. I must emphasize minor as I have removed the nose panels for inspection and I have pictures of the bus from when the emblem was stolen. I have had the other panels off and inspected everywhere. There is no rust or body work. The undersides of the doors are perfect, the inner window frames and sills are perfect as well as every other place that is usually problematic on buses. The area under the battery only had surface rust which I neutralized and treated, then installed a dry cell optima battery. This bus has been garaged all it’s life and has obviously never seen snow/salt or hardly any rain.
Needless to say, everything works as it should on this bus, lights, signals, horn, etc. The mud flaps and front assist steps were installed by the original owner, possibly from the dealer.
This is a numbers matching vehicle. The engine is the infamous “Bastard 36” engine and has never been taken apart. The bus runs and drives as it did the day it was new, it is unreal and a true pleasure to drive.
The bus was purchased from the original owner by a classic car broker in 1987. The bus had 17,000 miles on it at the time and was completely original. A man in Pennsylvania ended up purchasing the bus, detailed it and showed it at many events winning many awards and was featured in VW Trends magazine, the Volkswagen Club of America monthly magazine as well as other articles.
When he decided to sell the bus, it was purchased by the Discover Credit card company when it was listed for sale in 1997. They applied licensed Jerry Garcia artwork on the bus with some sort of somewhat removable paint. The bus went on a national tour/food drive starting with a grand unveiling in San Francisco. On the road trip tour, people were encouraged to sign up for the “Private Issue Jerry Garcia Edition” Credit card. The credit card featured the matching artwork that was found on the bus. People with the credit card were entered to win the bus in a raffle. The winner of the bus received a lot of media attention due to them not wanting the bus due to tax implications. Discover ended up keeping the bus for several more years before donating it to a local church. The church had the art removed and painted the bus painted on the exterior only prior selling the bus to raise money for a ministry.
The bus was purchased by a woman in Fargo North Dakota as a surprise birthday present for her husband in 2004. I purchased the bus from them.
This bus comes with a lot of documentation and history, including, bills of sale from original owner, the Hemmings Motor News where the broker listed it for sale in 1987, many trophies, press releases from Discover Credit card company, news paper articles about the winners of the bus, letters from the winners of the bus to the man who sold it to Discover, the matching Discover Credit Card, Magazine articles etc. It’s a large box of documents and history. I have too much documentation to list, there is a lot more.
