Halogen "Inserts" for Sealed Beam Headlights

I'm kind of fascinated with the early inserts (do these have a formal name?) that were made to enable the use of halogen bulbs in sealed beam headlights such as the SWB U.S. lights. I'm not sure how many different kinds were introduced but I've been starting to accumulate them and have three so far.

I've written about these previously. As far as I can tell they are the most exotic of the early inserts. These were first introduced in the early '70's just before the dual filament halogen bulb came in and, similar to H1's, have two reflectors and two single filament bulbs that can be adjusted independently. These were only produced for a short period of time as the dual filament bulb made all of the expensive complexity unnecessary.

These were made in Italy and used a single dual filament bulb, the H4. I'm not sure what their production dates were, but given that the H4 was first introduced in 1972 it would have been then and later.

Produced in France the Auteroche inserts also used one dual filament bulb. I have found it very difficult to find information on these.

I'm sure there must be others. Please post here if you have additional information and pictures.

    Cheers,
    John

Cibié Bi-Iode! Seems they were used on Porsche rally/racing cars at the time. They're hard to find but I've been able to source a few. They take H1 bulbs.

Ha, while searching for pics I came upon this thread at Pelican, started by yourself!

This is a pair of Cibié H4 inserts that came on a ''66 I once had. I believe they were stamped "Iode" on the lens as they were a single reflector not two (bi). Only photos I have offered as a reference.

The Cibie headlamps accomodate the dual filament H4 and are from a later period. The ones that I'm fascinated with are the 7" sealed beam dual bulb replacement units. They were a very clever way to enable dual beam halogen headlamps during the short period from the late 60's which had only single element halogen bulbs ( H1, H2 and H3 ) to the early 70's when the dual filament H4 was introduced. A short period of interesting ingenuity by the headlamp manufacturers.

Here are a couple pictures of Hella Bi-Iodes that I haven't posted yet:

I think these are pretty rare - I'm having a hard time finding information on them anyway.

I'm trying to identify and collect as many as possible and this is what I have so far:

    o S.E.V. Marchal Amplilux
    o Cibie Bi-Iodes
    o Hella Bi-Iodes
    o Carello
    o AuterRoche

A short interesting period in headlamp evolution. Are there others that I'm missing?

    Cheers,
    John

P.S. I just sold my mint set of Ampliluxes and I'm having seller's remorse. Anyone happen to have a set that you would like to sell or trade?

There might be. I'll probably set one up at Rennsport - be sure to stop by!
