Engine grille disassembly and re assembly

    Guys

What procedure do I follow to disassemble a 73 Engine grille for anodizing and then I assume the reverse assembling again?

One thing I would do before disassembly though would be to mount the grill on a lid and straighten all of the bars first. You don't want to be doing that after fresh anodizing.

The vertical bars are aluminum riveted together so step two is to carefully drill out the rivets. Once the bars are split then you can remove the sections of mesh screen and the T bolts. The mesh is not in one continuous piece. Also, the top and bottom edges of the mesh have a fine rubber seal that is then press fit into the upper and lower slats. Those are easily pried out. The slats are numbered so take note for reassembly.

The slats are more difficult to remove as they are clamped to the upper half of the bars. The bar projections that the slats clamp onto have teeth to help hold the slats in place once clamped. They can be carefully pried apart though. You have to spread the slts on both sides of the bars very carefully working from side to side until you start to feel them loosen.

I bought aluminum rivets from McMaster Carr that were close enough. You can go full anal and buy metric sized rivets. Many companies out there that can be sourced from.

The slats are numbered too. Makes it hard(er) to put them back incorrectly. LOL!

I just did this on the weekend, however, I didn't separate the vertical slats and remove the mesh.

The explanation above by 70SATMan is excellent, follow this direction and you will be fine, I might add taking a few photos for reference just in case.

Show a few images of your project, before and after?

    All the best,

Any sources for new mesh if the present one is damaged?
