    Color code steelies

    Hi there,
I recently bought steelies in Germany but they are dark grey painted.
Can anyone tell me the RAL color code for the steelies used in the sixties on the late 356/ early 911??
I want to repaint them professionally.

Most appreciated and rgds Egbert from Holland

Although I am not sure of the 'real' paint code for 'steelies', when mine were restored, they were done by west coast wheel guru, Harvey Weidman. He didn't like the brightness of the silver paint he was going to use, so he did (what I am told), a Ferrari silver. To do that, he added black paint to the mix. The silver steelies now look super. You might want to check with him for the accurate blend.

    Egbert,

most Porsche wheels use 924 or 925. When I asked my DuPont dealer, he recognized 1 of these numbers, I do not remember which one was it.
You might also want to check Dupont Chromabase NH583M (L) Honda Vogue Silver

Chrome plated steel wheels were standard on early 911s, of course a few cars probably came with painted wheels.

neunelf, is there some method of documenting that steel wheels were chrome on early 911s?

i probably have 10 steel wheels dated 65-70 with original finish and only one is chrome.

I have some period materials which show chrome wheels as standard on the earliest 911s:

    Accessories Prices List - publication no. W 191 - September 1965
    9118 Verchromte Lochscheibenra~der, 5 Stück (bei 911 ohne Mehrpreis) DM290 $72.50
    901.361.013.22 Chrome-plated wheels, 5 pieces (for 911 standard equipment)
1 garniture de roues ajourees et chrome es, 5 pieces (sur Ia 911 sans supplement de prix)
Ruote a disco forato, cromate, 5 pezzi (di serie nel 911)

Porsche built 2 or more 912s for every 911 and chrome wheels were pricey on the 912 so steel wheels would be more common in the earliest years.

After 1967 when top-of-the-line 911s had Fuchs alloy wheels chrome steel might no longer have been standard.
