Help please, where is the Odometer pick-up point on a 1970 2.2T ?

Hi guy's, my odometer (miles counter) is erratic these days, sometimes it counts and sometimes not. Before going for the instrument itself, I would like to check the pick- up point but do not know where to look for it, on the gearbox ?
Any help is very welcome ! Thanks already and enjoy the first summer WE !

This is a common issue on the early VDO instruments.
You can save your time and go directly for the Speedo if it shows your speed but the km's are not working.
    Cheers

I agree with Uli. But to answer your question, the speedometer drive comes off the front right of the gearbox, near the gearbox mount. There is a right angle drive that protrudes from the gearbox case. But if the speedo works smoothly then the drive and cable are fine and the problem is in the odometer drive gear.

The odometer drive is geared. The trip odo drives off the cable and the main odo drives off the trip odo. The trip odo drive gear starts to slip on its shaft. This can be brought on by age and by resetting the trip odo while the car is moving. Seems like I've fixed this on every German car I've owned.

    Thank' Mike,
Very helpful. I think you and Ulli are most probably correct on the Odo ( instument rather than cable) but at least now i know a bit more

    Thank's Ulli,
I think you are correct. 45 years of faultless service is indeed an achievement, time to change the gears....
