    Battery size for a 68 911S

After 3 years of a total resto, the car comes off the jack stands tomorrow. Hopefully, in the next two weeks the rebuilt 2.0 liter and tranny will be installed.

So it's time to be getting a battery. Does anyone know the physical size of the original battery?

    Thanks
    Larry

    All SWB 911s use the same battery: 999.611.010.90 BATTERY 12 V 45 AH 1

Here are notes I copied from the PCA website:

    Question:
Hi , I am in the United Kingdom, trying to find the O/E battery for a 912 I would like the dimensions and to know where can I get one.

    Answer:
The battery that is an exact fit for all early single battery 911s and 912s is a U.S. size 2HN. This was described to me as an "ordinance" battery used in pairs in 24 volt military vehicles such as the Jeep. It is 5 1/4 inches wide, 10 3/16 inches long and 9 inches high. The battery applications list suggests a 22NF which is too short for the tray and cover but will work if you don't care about originality and maximum battery capacity. I have purchased a couple of 2HN batteries from Cargo Battery Co., 303-296-8763, here in Denver, Colorado. They cost about $100. They are sold dry so they can be shipped if you can't find one on your side of the pond. David Seeland - PCA WebSite - 10/12/2004

    From g503.com

    2HN 10 3/16 x 5 1/4 x 8 15/16

    From oreillyauto.com the 22NF is:

    Length (In): 9-3/8 Inch
    Width (In): 5-1/2 Inch
    Height (In): 9 Inch

By the way, 22NF batteries also fit some Ford tractors.

Back before there were lots of sizes of Optima batteries, there was an Optima intended for some Honda cars. It was a little narrower then 2HN or 22NF but it would fit. Now, the Optima website recommends the Optima YT R 2.7 which is:

    Length: 237 mm / 9.33 in
    Width: 129 mm / 5.08 in
    Height: 227 mm / 8.94 in

The common class of battery today is the 51R. I think all manufactures use this number. Gordon

Thank you. I have been looking for this. I have the original cover and base and this helps.

Use a 51R that is the ticket, the R stands for reverse poles so make sure you do not buy a size 51

Purchased the Sonnenschein A512/55A from Ft Lauderdale Battery, fits perfectly and looks the part in my 68. Purchased an old style Bosch sticker from a 190SL shop to finish the look, although might have been marginally more correct.

The Sonnenchein batteries are back in stock. They only have 15 units on hand at $185 a piece. Got mine yesterday while I was in the area.
