    Gas tank for '72

I'm almost there. I only need a couple of parts before I can start my project.

I need a gas tank for a 1972. I have acquired a pair of gas tanks, neither of which is correct for a '72. I don't want a new one. I want one that is in decent original condition. It does not have to be perfect. Can't be too badly rusted as the car it's going in is a good original non rusted '72. The dark tank is a tank from a '70. My understanding is that they quit using the black/dark coating around mid '71 and then they went to the lighter coating like the tank on the right. It's a '73.5 CIS tank. The last two pics are of the fittings on the tanks. The tank with open fittings is what the MFI tanks looked like (the kind I'm looking for). The other pic with the tape on the fittings is what the CIS tanks looked like, the CIS tanks also had a plug on the very bottom of the tank which is slightly visible in the photo. I've been looking for a couple years waiting for one to pop up but I'm tired of waiting so I figured why not reach out. Please, if you have any questions or input feel free to comment. I'm always learning something new about Porsches.

After searching for Surflex it has me very curious. Have you ever used it on a tank before with good results?

Yes, and it looks just fine to me - but I don't have concoursitis...

You call them and talk to the woman who knows all about us crazy people. Ask for "that gray mix that the Paterek brothers use" - she should know just what it is. Cost me about $35.

Let me know if she retired and that bit of cultural memory was lost and I'll start an archeological dig in my garage to see if I can find the can...

I'd be more worried about the inside.

for the inside (on a non-CIS tank) take it to a shop at a nearby general aviation airport (the small planes)

tell them you do not need any FAA certs as it for a car and you can save some $$

I just pulled the brass screened drain plug out of mine last winter and it was fine after 100,000 miles, but it is always good to check
