FS: Mahle Gasburner Wheels - Magnesium, 5 of them

Real Magnesium Mahle Gas Burner rims. 15 x 5.5, dated 1970 (the ones I can read, anyway - can check dirty ones for someone that's concerned). These are rare and aren't always clean - the magnesium is known to corrode quickly and easily, just like VW BRM wheels.

Five of them so you can have a matching spare. One wheel was painted blue at one point, is partially stripped. One wheel had a crack and was welded and repaired.

    $3800

It wasn't painted blue. Blue is the color of the primer used under the silver paint. The top coat has just worn exposing the blue primer.

25 years ago I tried to polish a set of these. I gave up after the first one when it turned blue. Boy I sure was confounded. Now it all makes sense.

Thanks - fair amount of interest from the 914-6 crowd, not as much from the 911 crowd...

Yes, when I restored my rare Campagnolo's (which are magnesium as well) they were blue-ish under the old silver paint. I would be on those if I had the 5 lug set up.

Nice hot set those Mahle's! The 914/6 crowd would be first on those! Good Luck!

So is the blue paint a special primer for magnesium?

I don't know how 'special' it is, but Mahle used it on their magnesium wheels, so in a qualified way, yes. Thanks for the input Varooom.
