Which rearview mirror is correct for a '72?

Can anybody tell me when they used the mirrors in the pics? I believe my '72 used the fine pebbled mirror (the second photo) and that the leather grain type backed mirror (the first photo) is actually from a 914 I had from '73 or '74. Searching has failed to show which mirror a '72 came with although I thought I had seen it somewhere before. Thanks in advance, Derek

    Hi,

Some say that the second mirror was on the 69-71 cars, 1973 and later 911's had the top mirror which was used on the 914 and 928 as well. Missing the 1972 build cars but on all the RS's (including mine) I have seen with original mirrors they had the lower type, which is a tad smaller. So not conclusive yet but I would say bottom mirror on all F series 911's.

    Thumbs up

    Derek,

Just went out in the garage and took this of my '73.......... I have no reason to think it's not original to the car...

    Not sure about the '72

    Cheers

Thank you guys. I'm sure that is your correct mirror Chuck. They must have used that mirror up through '73. Quite a relief since it's the mirror in better shape. Cees, you are correct too in that the pebbled back mirror (I don't know what else to call it) is about 1/4" shorter indicating that glass is not compatible between the two mirrors.

Great! My car is also a Jan. of '72 production so that helps out a lot. Thanks

My '72 has the pebbled mirror. I believe it is a Feb '72 build but I'm still trying to research that for sure. The gauges are stamped 12/71. Up until now I thought my mirror had been replaced with an earlier mirror.
