    Build/Production/Chassis numbers

    I have just picked up a car which is registered as a 71 but has short hood body bits. Has a 911/52 engine on carbs and a 901 style dogleg 'box.

    The front doesn't have battery boxes. I haven't done any deep digging yet to see exactly what has gone on but I am guessing it has had a later (post 73) front clip put on. The chassis number has been removed from the fuel tank support panel.

    Just wondering whether the chassis number appears anywhere else on the car other than the fuel tank support panel?

    And/or is it possible to get more info from the build/production number - it is 1014XXX which I am told means it is a Porsche built 1971 911. Is there anyone out there who can tell me more - I understand someone (Porsche) has a direct link between the production/build number and chassis number.
    Cheers

    1 = 911
    0 = coupe
    1 = 1971
    last 4 digits tell you it was the 4 thousandth and something Porsche built coupe in 1971

    There is no more info in that number and as you have probably found out Porsche in Australia won't tell you any info even if you have the production number
    which you do

    I know Porsche won't tell but wondering whether:

    - is there anywhere else on the car the chassis number might appear (other than the Porsche ID plate which, like a lot of cars converted to short hood, probably ended up in a scrap metal bin with the nose panel)

    - in the same way that Porsche no longer provides access to Kardex but some people seem to have access one way or another, is there someone out there who can use the production/build number to access details of my car?

    Thanks Max. Stamped in the A pillar steel? Or a separate tag? Can't see it anywhere on mine.

    Mitchell. That is for USA cars only. Did not apply to others so if your car is not usa delivered or spent time in the USA it won't exist

    Thanks Hugh. Is there nowhere else at all that the chassis number appears on the body shell? Even a crayon scratching by a worker on the production line?

    I don't think so Mitchell. Your car is not a karmann produced one which has a number on the centre tunnel near the gear linkage access plate and the crayon numbers are production numbers on the dash. It is not a USA car so does not have the a pillar number or the decal in the door jamb. I think the only way forward from here is to try to back track the history.....but looking for a needle in a haystack might be easier than that. Even your registration papers don't give a proper chassis number but previous ones might.
