Porsche Rare Parts and Porsche prices...

Recently a few famous and well respected Porsche experts have told me that there are guys out there complaining that execmalibu (that is me) is selling 911 parts that he got for almost nothing for crazy prices...

Well that is 100% TRUE and ACCURATE.

    A few true stories...

A while back I got a call from a buddy of mine "Ron Kipper" who told me that he just left a deposit on a 1958 Speedster with a 4 Cam Carrera 2 Engine, that he scored for only $5,000...

I asked how much he wanted for the car and Ron said he wanted to make $50,000 on the car. I said NO PROBLEM and sent Ron $55,000 in cash and picked up the Speedster from the sellers garage.

Ron never lifted a finger and never even moved the car and he made $50,000 in one hour! I kept the Aluminum GT Doors and the Carrera 2 Engine and I sold the car to Micheal C. the drummer for Boy George for $60,000. Years later I sold the Carrera 2 Engine and the GT doors for $45,000..

It turns out that that Speedster was 84912 a Factory Carrera GT SPEEDSTER and is probably worth over $1,000,000 today.

Was I pissed that Kipper made $50K in one hour... In a word NO! Ron scored and I also scored. Ron and I still goof about it today...

About 7-8 years ago a local Porsche shop was closing and I was picking through the misc parts they had for sale stored up in the rafters. Some of the same rare parts I am selling today. The seller offered me several good used 911 cases for FREE (including one blank 7R case). I declined them because cases had little or no value to me and cases are heavy and take up a lot of room... We threw all the 911 cases into the dumpster... True!

Ironically the very next day Rick Cabell posted on this site that he needed a blank 7R case. I asked Rick how much would he pay for one, he said "$3,000"... I raced back to the now closed Porsche shop and dug into the dumpster and pulled out the blank 7R case. Was Rick pissed that I got the case for free... NO he was happy to score one for $3K!

A couple years later I bought the empty 73S case that I have for sale from Rick Cabell for $5,000...

Today Rick Sent me a check for $450 for a used door top that has a tiny crack... Rick who has more parts resources then most Porsche guys has been looking for a door top for well over a year! Door tops came on every 911 (1971-1977) and they used to be at every Porsche swap meet for just $5.00!

Is Rick pissed that he paid $450 for one... No! Why don't you ask him?....

The point is that Porsche Cars and parts are rare and very desirable... What someone paid for a car or part is absolutely irrelevant!

If you want the rare part then buy it if not don't whine about it...

My dad sold a complete, but basket case 935 motor for $1500 and a Bosch twin plug cap and rotor. That was in the late 90s...

I love this response although I have only been into 356 and 911's for 30 years. What I have found with parts for 356's is you MUST pay what the price is today for the hard to find parts. Why .....because they will cost more tomorrow and for every day moving forward until they will truly not be obtainable.
So anyone who bought the excellent or NOS rear sliver edge rear lenses that were available can make $100 very quickly by selling them to me !
Thanks for saving and having the parts .

I'm just upset that the parts are not attainable by "regular" guys. I drive my car. A lot. More than probably 80% of owners. Maybe more. The prices of parts scare me as I drive and use the car.

    I totally agree!

About 30 years ago Tony Singer had a set of complete 60mm SPYDER/GT front brakes (Drums, backing plates, spacers and shoes) for sale at $800. At the time $800 was crazy insane money for these brakes!

I wanted them for my Carrera Speedster so I bought them for the $800...

All my Porsche buddies said I was an absolute fool to pay that much (OK so I was) but when I asked them where I could buy another set for less they said "Well you can't find them anywhere... But $800 is still too much.."

About 5-7 years passed and NOT one other set of GT Brakes ever of came up for sale at any price...

When I finally sold my speedster 15 years later I took them off and sold those exact same GT brakes for $10,000!

I often say... You can always find more money but you may not ever find these rare parts again! or You can't pay too much... Just too soon!
