    Front Fenders

    Hi,

Can anybody please tell me the difference between a 1967 front Fender and a 1968 one?

I know of only one - 2 and 4 holes for the grills is there any other?

    Thanks

Both the 67&68 fenders have 2 hole grilles.
The main difference is the 67 has a standard wide lip and the 68 the lip is trimmed.
The other difference is the 68 has internal headlight attachments.
The 4 hole grille fender is much earlier........
The 68 fender superseded them all very early on.

According to Dr. B. Johnson's book first car with 2 screw grilles is 303468.

my 912, 350943 had four screw horn grilles. I think this roughly relates to cars built in 1965.

Harvey has it essentially right. very early (65-66) cars had 4-hole horn grills. 67-68 cars had two screw-holes for the horn grills. beginning in '68, headlight buckets had 4 tabs for headlight mounting. also, the '68 fender lips were 'trimmed' to allow for wider wheels, with a thin lip at the top of the whell arch, and a wider lip at each end. 65-67, the lip is consistent over the entire wheel arch.

in addition, a true '68 OE fender had two drilled holes ahead of the wheel arch for the '68 side reflectors.

now, here comes the confusing part ... beginning in '68, it appears that all factory replacement fenders for SWB were essentially the same. The replacement fenders had tapered fender lips; 4 tabs inside the headlight buckets; 2 screw holes for the horn grills; BUT the reflector holes were absent (they had to be drilled by the shop). I suspect that this is part of the reason that so many restored '68s have no front side reflectors.

    Hope this helps.

Harvey has it right. When the 68 cars were introduced, all short wheel base, replacement, fenders in Porsche's inventory were "superceeded" to 68 fenders. I don't recall ever seeing a new factory 68 fender with holes for the reflectors. The reflectors were just an add-on for US cars and the holes were drilled by the shop or person replacing them.

Keep in mind with early fenders being so hard to get, some take 68 fenders and weld-in tabs to accept 4-hole grills.

Thanks for all the info, I knew you guys would come through and help...as always Thanks

It looks Like the pair I have are for a 1964 - 1965 car in fairly excellent condition.

I don't want to change the tabs from 4 to 2 just to make them fit my 66/67S

And they could be put to good use on a early car but that leaves me needing a excellent pair of 67 fenders (UK)

Your fenders should also have numbers stamped in the headlight buckets that are the last numbers of the chassis number of the car they came from
