    2016 VW Golf R

Trying to help keep VW afloat, I brought home a new daily driver this weekend😄
Never bought a car off of the showroom floor before- 3 guys were literally lined up behind me to buy it if I balked. The R is a blast...

DSG/paddles. I'm a big fan of this transmission and love the sounds too.
Got it for sticker, no markup, and the just announced $2k rebate for current VW owners (my sons '07 GTI).
These are not being discounted otherwise, from from what I hear.

there are a lot of golf enthusiasts here....a year ago I picked up a 2012 Golf R, I knew the new gen was coming but the first run(s) would be all DSG. my requirement was a 6MT, found a low mileage 4 door in carbon steel grey. It's a blast, unlike nearly everything else on the road (at this price) it's a driver's car, real feedback, none of the isolation you feel in so many other sporty cars.

The original GTIs hit dealer lots when I was in high school and I've been a fan
ever since. They occupy a rare sweet spot of just doing everything so well.

I love my GTI but absolutely abhor the DSG. Dumbest gearbox I've ever had the displeasure of suffering. It's NEVER in the right gear ... when you leave it in D.

Drop it into M and start slapping the paddles and the car becomes a whole world better. Having had a manual GTI I have to say the DSG in manual mode is a FAR superior car ... the clutch actuation of the manual cars is absolute trash.

I know there are a number of companies who offer an aftermarket DSG tune that cleans up the shift points and increases shifting speed, too, but I've only ever driven one car that was so-equipped and it was marginally better. I think having spent some quality time behind the wheel of the DSG-tuned car I would have been more appreciative of the difference.

All that said, though, I think the GTI is one of the best platforms on the market. I found my way to VW after looking at Subaru WRXs and Audi A4s. The VW struck that golden middle ground ... it wasn't as fast as the WRX or as luxurious as the Audi, but it was enough of everything at the best price...with 0.9% interest for the life of the loan. It just made sense.

I just sold my 2015 GTI, DSG. I agree with Marco, it was NEVER in the right gear, even in Sport mode. Also, the torque steer was unbearable, and when pulling off the line? The FWD never got anything resembling good traction. I'm SURE that the 'R' is a different car, but FWD and DSG just didn't cut it.

I drove a 2014 Sportwagen 2.5 gasoline with DSG after driving the TDI with DSG. I was hooked on the TDI. I don't think I would enjoy the 6 MT because of all the shifting that would be required in the narrow torque range of the TDI. Particularly with alot of city driving. Just my opinion, but I really like it.

I drive my sons GTI occasionly and agree about traction and torque steer on that car but still think it's massively fun to drive. The R car though with the AWD just puts all the power down and launches in a way the GTI just can't.
