Thread: Does all E engines have green shroud ?

Does all E engines have green shroud ?

I have a 1969 E with a red shroud, the engine number is 6298366 and VIN 119220471. Can this be right or it must be green? You see anything wrong with the engine or missing anything?

    Thanks in advance.

    Bill,

    Yes, '69E's had green shrouds......

Your VIN is consistent with '69 E Karmann Coupe, your engine No. is consistent with one of 583 type 911/11 for/Sportomatic transmissions...

So far with the info you supplied one can assume that your green engine shroud was swapped for a red at some point.....

Of course what we don't know is what parts might be inside your E engine........

    Hope this helps,
    Chuck

It is obvious that you have the 72-73 style MFI throttle stacks and valve bodies. Maybe there are some 'S' pieces in there?

What are the numbers cast into the plastic air stakes, and can you see the numbers on the top of the injection pump? Gordon

On my iPhone it looks like the shroud may have been painted. Am I seeing a hint of green around the missing fastener hole?

definitely a later shroud than 69, as it has the grey air channel which the 69 shrouds didn't have.

If your stacks are 312 stacks, they are 2.4 S stacks, if they are 314 stacks, they are 2.4 E stacks, if they are 316 stacks, they are 2.4 T stacks. The part number on the top tag on the MFI pump will tell you which model the pump originally went on. Most likely will be a number ending in 013, 014, or 015. S, E, or T respectively. Could be another number also. Post a pic of the tag on top of the pump to tell more. It will also tell you the month of manufacture of the pump itself. Its definitely the wrong setup for '69E as you would have had magnesium stacks. There is overspray on the shroud and the sticker on the air filter housing is painted over. Fan has obviously been painted black as well as the fan housing strap. Perhaps the whole front of your engine was painted black at some point. Your pump is puzzling me, even the thermostat looks like aluminum. I have '72 and '73 pumps and neither has aluminum thermostats like that. Your snorkel is an earlier snorkel than '72,'73 that has been cutoff. Long story short, post a pic of the tag on top of your pump and post pics of your stack numbers. We could tell a lot more by those numbers.

Thanks everyone, I learned a lot, concerned about it belonging to a Sportomatic because it has a 5 speed now. I am wanting to buy this car, see it end of month. But concerned about it being a bunch of parts put together.

So I cannot get more pictures because owner is not home now.
