    1968 911L with 70-71 911E (Type 911 Transmission) Which Axles?

As the title states, I've decided to use the 70-71 type 911 gearbox in my 68 911L build.

I've already acquired the clutch, PP, clutch fork and flywheel, and am attempting to get the rest of the pieces I need.

My question is, what axles should I run with this setup?

The stock '68 won't work. Will the 70-71 axles work? Will I need something custom?

    Thanks folks!

I am no expert by any means. When I was making this same decision in the course of my project I found this photo to be helpful.

I would think you would be limited to using the SWB axle....selecting and then matching up the joint flange in the transmission with the hub in the rear trailing arm is the key, number of splines and compatibility of the parts I'll leave to others.

You will need to use the axles from the 68 chassis. You can use output flanges from a 914. They will needed to be modified just a bit but that is the easiest way to make that trans work in your 68.

I thought that the 911 transmission was the same width over the flanges as the 915.

We fitted a 915 into a SWB car last year (along with a Carrera 3 motor) and the SWB shafts were too long and didn't have enough plunge.

We shortened the SWB shaft so that they would fit and used a 6 bolt 100mm dia CV on the transmission side.

Is the 914 flange shorter? so that the SWB drive shaft will fit

There are 2 different output flanges for 915s. The 72/73 flange is shorter than the 74/75. I have pictured a 72/72 flange, a 914 flange and a 74/75 flange. All of these flanges are interchangeable in a 915 with course spline spider gears. The 74 on flange is wider because the 74/75 CV joint is thinner than the 72/73

Disregard most of what I said in the previous post. I was reminded by my friend Jon Bunin (genuine Porsche transmission expert) that most of my previous info is not correct. The 3 flanges I have pictured are L to R ,72 thru 75 915 flange, 914 flange and 69 (mag case) thru 71 901/911 flange. You will still need to use the 914 flanges in your project to make thing work.

Chris, the width over the flanges of a 915 transmission is greater if everything is stock. It will be the same if 911 flanges are used.

Yes, beyond the differential it is 5mm shorter than a 69-71 911 flange.

The CV joint & axle chart posted at the top of the page is not accurate.

The factory Workshop Manual page documenting the change in CV joints and axles for model year 1972.
An Information Circular noting the chassis numbers when the change occurred in October '71.

The transmission flanges were extended, and axle lengths increased, to compensate for the new, narrow CV joints.
