    Recoiling Seat Belt

Is there a way to fix a built-in recoiling seat belt mechanism in a 72 coupe? Half the time it has to be coaxed to pull the belt out and the other half of the time it will not re-coil the belt. Is it a matter of lubrication? Any thoughts?

Your belt material is probably worn and starting too curl up. When that happens the belt will not retract properly. Just a sign of age.

Open the widest of the two plastic covers and you will find the lock/retract wheel. Pull the webbing and see what is going on. If you are lucky it just needs lubrication...

Did the 72 come with retractable belts ? I have a set of fixed ones on my 72 and they annoy the $%#$% out of me... I wouldn't mind a swap if something's being repro'ed !

Yes, they were an option. It is easy to fit your car with inertia reel seat belts. Yes, the fixed belts are a pain in the butt.
