    1968 911S VIN # Question "1183"

    My father and I are diehard Porsche fans, and have bought and sold a few over the years. We are both project seekers and while this usually gets us in trouble, we often stubmle across some really cool Porsche history along the way. Take for example, the 1972 Porsche 911T we purchased with a 1967 Porsche 911S motor in the back

    We came across another find earlier today but this one has me stumped pretty good. I am hoping that your collective wisdom can either squash my dreams of this car being a 911S, or encourage me to make an offer! This car does not have the original 911S 2.0 engine, but I know a guy who might!

    The VIN# 1183xxxx

    Decoded, what I have so far is : Typ 911 1968 "Coupe" however other sources suggest "Coupe S"

    According to my research, there is conflicting information regarding the "3" in the VIN, however, 1180xxxx is ALSO listed as a 911S chassis but I believe this number was to indicate it was manufactured at Karmann?

    Information below from - https://www.stuttcars.com/technical/vin-decoder/

    Model Year 1968 (8 digit)
    Example: 12801211 → MY1968 912 Coupé (Karmann)
    11 - 911

    8 - 1968

    0 - 911S Coupé, 911L Coupé, 912 Coupé (Karmann)
    1 - 911L Coupé
    2 - 911T Coupé, 912 Coupé
    3 - 911S Coupé
    5 - 911L Targa, 911S Targa
    6 - 911L Targa
    7 - 911T Targa, 912 Targa
    8 - 911 Targa
    9 - 911 R5678Serial number

    Conflicting Registry Information - http://www.elferhelfer.com/fzident/fzident68.htm

    Verschlüsselung der Fahrgestellnummer Modell 1968 am Beispiel MN 11860111:
    11
    8
    6
    0111

    11= Typ 911
    8= Modell 68
    0= S Coupe
    1= L Coupe
    2= T Coupe
    3= Coupe
    5= S Targa
    6 = L Targa
    7 = T Targa
    8= Targa
    fortlaufende Nummer 4-stellig,
    falls beginnend mit "5", dann eine von Karmann prod. Karosserie

    Any ideas here?! The suspense is killing me. I have also seen a few classifieds with this VIN # and they have indicated that they were awaiting confirmation their car was a 911S.

    It is not a 911T, 911L or 911S, but a US model 911.

    i am certainly not the final word, but my data says 1183xxx is a regular/normal 911 bound for USA, as Jon B has suggested. (sorry)

    part of the reason for the quest is that I bought a 1972 911 E Targa a year or so ago and it had an earlier carburated engine in it.
    As it turned out, it was a 1967 911 S engine (961373) and I was looking for a car to put it in. I have since bought the correct MFI engine
    for the '72 E.

    The engine has Zenith Carbs, not the original WEBERS. It was CARB certified! back in the day when the guy put the new motor in the car. Probably why he
    substituted the WEBERS.....Anyway, not sure what to do with it now. I'm sure it has pretty good value these days...

    So which engine spec would the 'US 911' have?
    Thanks,

    The original source for a lot of this is the little Technical Specifications Booklet, which may well be why those little booklets are so expensive or hard to find:

    The US spec 911s and 911Ls had the same engines: 130 hp [DIN] with Weber carburetors and pollution controls. There was the 901/14 for 5 speeds and 901/17 for Sportomatics. It seems there were a few variations in the pollution controls.
