    1965 911 rear seat question

    Hello Gang,

We are slowly plugging away on the restoration of a 1965 911 coupe and a few questions have arisen about what the the rear seat treatment should be. I'm a little unclear about which is the correct arrangement for the car. It has standard basketweave front seats, no sport seats or anything like that. Dr. Johnson's book shows "unique cushions" but the photo is a bit fuzzy. Should they be standard cushions with the "curtains" around them, or is it a different pad and cover altogether? Is there a good trim supplier that understands the differences between these early cars and later ones?

Also, am I correct in my understanding that the rear seats are smooth regardless if the fronts are basketweave or not?

    Many thanks for the input!

    Rear Seat Pictures

    Hello geofftii2002!

Here are two pictures of my original rear seats, from 302340. Hopefully these pictures will help! You are correct that the rear seats do not use basketweave material.

Autobahn Interiors is highly, highly recommended, and very busy as a result. I used Autos International for my new interior pieces. They did a very good job and were a pleasure to work with!

    Good luck with the restoration!

Thank you so much for the information. That is a very big help. I forgot about Autos International - its been so long since I've done an older Porsche that all of the good parts suppliers have gotten foggy.

    Cheers!

Here's a contemporary photo of the back seats from a Porsche of America brochure showing a good view of the back seats.

You can see the whole brochure at http://coochas.com/brochures/Resources/911-1964.5.pdf.

The same brochure has a view of the front.

You can see that it has a "4-button" dash so its an early 1965 car. The trip odometer reset knob is also very unusual, probably making this car really early, maybe a '64 build.

I think it shows perforated leatherette on the front seat inserts; the earliest 911s had perforated leatherette like late 356s--not basketweave. I can't be at all sure from these pictures but I think the rear seats are smooth, not perforated.

    Jim,

thank you for posting that. Very cool. Old strikers for the doors, a hockey puck and no batwing horn button and even the position of the clutch pedal is interesting! It sticks out further than the brake pedal.

I just happened to find a slightly later 1965 911 (in my garage). The clutch-brake pedal relationship is similar.
