    removing tach

I have a 72 & I am replacing the dash lights. I need to remove the tach. How do I remove the upper & lower covers behind the steering wheel? I have removed the 2 screws on the sides. Are there any more screws?

I did this not all too long ago. There are two screws (don't remember the size off hand) at the rear of the clamshell that will need to be removed. Pretty easy to do. You can see the two holes where the screw reside.

Avoid all the extra time removing the tach and just remove the spedo and the combo gauge and reach in from the sides.

I went the hard way & took the wheel off. I noticed that the steering shaft had some play w/o the wheel in place. Is there a bearing on the upper shaft. I could not see one. Parts diagram show a bearing on the bottom of the shaft. Does the steering hold the shaft in place?

There is a ring that needs to be installed before the wheel that holds the steering shaft centered. It occasionally get stuck to the the wheel / hub when removed. If you need, you can do a search here and find several threads on the subject.
