I don't know what this means.
Did they start out with the left side cutouts for the bumps and then get rid of them and then bring them back?
    Stranger things have happened......
    yellow 72 original paint #1803
    silver 73 original paint #1080
    sand 69 welding looks original
white 66 welding looks original (bad angle, it has the cutout for bumps on the left)

What is the manufacturing date of the silver 73? Could it be a MY73 built in second part of 72?

This is a car that is a sepia 73E 100% similar to my car down to the brown interior (not tan) ;-) VIN is 200 cars earlier than mine.
Offered for sale by CPR classic and they claim it to be 100% original. It has the drain holes.

So maybe they went back to the early panel in late 73?
Maybe using up some old stock as they knew the 911G would be different?

Not so sure about that Sepia E #980 having its original slam panel. Here is a photo of 73E number 1070 that doesn't have drain holes.

All the original 71's I have in the shop have no drain holes. I have pictures of 2 original early 72S's as well and no drain holes. I have a 72T in the shop as well and no drain holes. I think it was a late 73 and later thing for the most part. But what do I know? It was an obvious update to help drain the water and prevent rust. Not a bad thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the slam panels with the drain holes came about at the same time as the reinforced doors. Perhaps they did the updates to the body at the same time.

They are the early panels. I would bet that there was a bunch of the early style still in inventory in late 73......
The reason that there are so many dispersed through out the years probably because the early panel was the part that was available when you tried to order a replacement.

They are inside the hood seal so they would only be good for drainage if the seal failed.

How early Harvey? When do you think they made the change?
