Thread: What tools/parts/emergency gear should a daily driven early 911 have?

    What tools/parts/emergency gear should a daily driven early 911 have?

    In your experience, what things are a must have and what things are good suggestions for tools, spare parts, emergency gear, etc? I don't mean concours correct tool kits and all that, but if you regularly or daily drive your early 911, what should one keep in the trunk? Right now, my 911 is my daily driver.

    I have a bag with a repro tool kit, jack, spare tire, flashlight, wire, string, electrical tape, tire pressure gauge, jumper cables, and small first aid kit. I was thinking of adding spare plugs, fire extinguisher, and a quart of oil in there as well. What else do you think? Any parts?

    Perhaps an electric air pump, and a backup set to points and CDI unit.

    a lot depends on how far away from home you are, but...

    Spanner for late model Fan Pulley
    set of 7 mm to 19 mm wrenches.
    small socket set 3 to 17 mm.
    ½" drive 19mm deep socket
    ½" dr. Breaker Bar & a 4" extension
    small mirror
    A hex key wrench (Allen) mm.
    Tube of Bosch Ignition Grease (Great stuff for any lubrication use)
    Spark plug socket and a 3" extension
    Spark plug connector

    small roll of Electricians tape

    Thanks. Aside from fuses, and a fan belt I don't have any parts, so thanks for those suggestions. That's a lot of stuff to consider!

    The travelling kit includes parts to rebuild the three cylinder heads on one side of the engine which exceeds the capabilities of the standard toolkit. It looks like the idea might have been to have emergency parts for your skilled mechanic. The travelling kits predate Federal Express.

    ^^^I agree- smart phone and towing insurance. It really does depend on how far you are going. Having the basic tool kit with the spare fan belt is wise, but beyond that you are just guessing. I mean where does it stop, a full tool kit, and every possible wear part down to chain rails? At some point you have to have faith in your maintenance, and a little luck.

    One big question that someone putting together a toolkit should ask himself is what tools does he like to use? Chances are pretty good you'll only perform repairs you know how to do.

    It's not always a matter of having the correct tools and parts. Several years ago I was on my way to a concours; heading up the ramp to the 10 freeway the car died like somebody throwing off a light switch.

    AAA brought the car home, and eventually I started looking for the problem. After some fruitless searching, I took off the distributor cap. The rotor fell out.

    The repair (putting the rotor back on and replacing the distributor cap) took a little over five seconds and required no tools or new parts.

    another way to look at it is to ask what were the most frequent failures the Porsche teams encountered on the African Safari Rallyes...
