    On The Hook (OTH)

    Took a nice spirited drive with my son today through the great back roads of North San Diego County. After about an hour the car died twice at idle while coming to a stop but then started right up; something it has never done before. A few miles later I felt an almost imperceptible miss and then it just died, almost like it ran out of fuel. The fuel was pretty low, but unless my gauge is off I had gas in the tank (about a quarter tank). I suspected the fuel pump, and when I turned the key I didn't hear the familiar whirring of the pump. Seems like the pump gave up the ghost. So a call to AAA and a very nice guy showed up with a brand new flatbed (he said I was the 5th car on it). Upon my arrival at home (60+ minutes later) I tried to start the car as I heard the fuel pump again (although it was not as loud as usual). Anyways, the car started but sounded rough and off, so something's up. Off to Wayne Baker's shop for a proper diagnosis and fix later this week....Inauspicious way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of my ownership!

    Well, I think I figured it out. My fuel gauge appears to be reading incorrectly and I believe I simply ran out of fuel. I put 4 gallons of fresh fuel in and things seem to be normal again; even the sound of the fuel pump sounded normal. I think I was tricked when the sound coming from the pump was much quieter than what I'm used to; I think it must have sounded off to me with no fuel running through it. Not a bad result if I'm correct.

    Does anyone know off-hand if the fuel sender unit is the same for a 62L tank and an 85L plastic tank? I have a spare fuel sender for my hot rod that I could use to test if they are the same...

    My gauge is off at low level with a new sender. I usually go by the trip odometer.

    Both senders are the same. Running out of gas is more common than people suspect, we always pull the sender and LOOK in the tank!

    .....I usually go by the trip odometer .....

    A long time ago an old gas station guy advised me to always keep the top half of the tank full.
    These days I go for about 200 km and usually add about 30 litres to fill.
    Running the tank on the bottom half is asking for debris from the gas station's tanks to strand you somewhere inconvenient and,long term,steel tanks rusting from water condensation in the top half.

    Little confused by that... I can see it on a 356 where the reserve was actually a lower pickup point in the tank. But since the 911 tank has not mechanical reserve and the pickup is presumably at the bottom of the tank to begin with, debris and stuff would get picked up immediately, no ? Old wive's tale or true ?

    I've run my 72 dry once because the gauge lies by a substantial amount (1/8th or so). I refilled it and suffered zero issues...
